The South Street J Shelf or Mantel Bracket

Our classic 5-inch wide J-style brackets are the solution to mounting gorgeous suspended-looking shelves without sacrificing heavy-duty support. Each handmade steel bracket includes a 1-inch lip to and a 6-inch long wall mount leg that’s fastened behind the shelf rather than below, offering the appearance of floating shelves. Thick-cut custom mantels easily hide the wall-mounted portion, providing a sleek, minimalist look for metal bracket supports.

NOTE: The “J” style does not leave the shelf flush with the wall. There will be a 1/4” gap between the wall and the shelf due to the thickness of the steel being behind the shelf.

Selecting Sizing: The South Street style bracket has a standard wall mount height of 6" Tall. When selecting your size choose the depth that is equal to the depth of the shelf you are hanging.

Raw Uncoated:

Reveals the steel’s natural luster, unprotected from rust. Recommended for those seeking a weathered, rusted finish or for those who plan to paint/coat the bracket themselves.

Powder Coat:

Creates a smooth, sealed finish in the desired color and offers extra rust protection. Recommended for use in potentially wet spaces such as a bathroom or outside.

Instructions on How To Hang A Heavy Shelf

Choose the right location: Find a stud in the wall where you want to hang the shelf using a stud finder and mark its position with a pencil. Make sure the location is level and centered where you want it.
Gather materials: You will need a heavy-duty shelf bracket or cleat, screws, drill, level, and measuring tape.
Install the bracket or cleat: Use screws to attach the bracket or cleat to the wall at the stud location. Make sure it is level and securely attached.
Attach the shelf: Place the shelf on top of the bracket or cleat, making sure it is level. Use screws to attach the shelf to the bracket or cleat from the bottom.
Test the stability: Gently push and pull on the shelf to make sure it is securely attached and can hold the weight you plan to put on it.

Note: If you are unsure about your ability to install the shelf safely, hiring a professional or seeking guidance from a hardware store may be best.
